When Should Kids Start Going To The Dentist?

Usually, we recommend children see us when their first tooth erupts or when they turn two years old

Here at Dream Smiles in Brisbane, we pride ourselves on being able to offer you and your family the very best dental treatment that extends to our children’s dentistry care. Our team, naturally, is highly trained in dental and oral health. But, it is our compassionate approach to children dentistry that sets us apart as a practice.

Much the same as the rest of the family, we offer a comprehensive range of children’s dentistry treatments from regular dental check-ups to sleep apnoea treatment. Our practice is located in Sunnybank just 5 minutes from Sunnybank Plaza and 15 minutes from the Brisbane CBD, so we are conveniently placed for you to come and see us.

The Dream Smiles team is led by Dr Eng Yang Tang and is supported by a group of dentists, oral hygienists and receptionists who are all passionate about making sure that each and every visit your child has with us is as pleasant as it can be. We have already helped thousands of patients achieve their dental goals and we believe strongly in educating our patients especially from a young age on the finer points of oral health so that they can make informed decisions.

So, when should kids start going to the dentist?

Children’s Dentistry from Dream Smiles

When you should bring your little ones in to see us is, either when their first tooth erupts or when they turn two years old. A baby’s first tooth can erupt anywhere from six months of age. That being said, it really is up to you to decide when they come in for their first visit. Whether or not you decide to bring your child in, there are some things that you can do for their oral health while you’re away from us like wiping their gums with a damp cloth after feeding. Never put them to bed having had juice or milk in their bottle because the sugars present will settle on their gums and may cause decay to occur in teeth that aren’t even visible yet.

When that first tooth does make an appearance, that’s your cue to start giving it a clean with a tiny bit of toothpaste no larger than a pea. Gently clean the tooth before rinsing their mouth out with some water. It’s important to remember that just because baby teeth fall out doesn’t mean that the cavities they have aren’t harmful to your child’s development. In fact, if the health of their baby teeth is compromised, it can adversely affect their adult teeth when they begin to erupt. This can result in their adult teeth erupting with complications and in some cases may require orthodontic work or even extractions.

Dream Smiles, Your Children’s Dentist In Brisbane

Upon your child’s first visit with us here at Dream Smiles, we will give them a quick whirl in the dentist’s chair so that they can become a little more familiar with the surroundings and to set them at ease. It’s important to establish as early as is possible that the dentist isn’t a place of anxiety or discomfort but rather a totally normal thing. We even encourage patients to bring their children along when they come in to see us to further this sense of familiarity and to observe that mum or dad isn’t scared when they are here.

Similarly, we don’t want you to feel anything other than total comfort when bringing your child in to see us. We want to allay any fears you may have about it being a traumatic or unsettling experience. At the end of the day, we all want what’s best for your child and aside from providing them with superior dental care, we will also treat them as we would our own children.
