Maybe you’ve lived your whole life with a smile that is just ever so slightly skew. Maybe you have some overlap, or conversely, some extra space between your teeth. If you’re not perfectly happy with the straightness of your smile, don’t frown – at Dream Smiles Orthodontics, we offer a range of different straightening treatments to help your smile shine.

Did you know that you can straighten your teeth at any age? While the teen years are preferable, if you missed out in your early life, there is no need to live with a crooked smile forever. Indeed, there are several different options available to you when it comes to teeth straightening, and at Dream Smile Orthodontics we will assist you in making the best decision for your teeth.

What Are The Benefits of Straightening My Teeth?

The clearest and obvious benefit to undergoing treatment to straighten your teeth is a cosmetic improvement in your smile. A straighter smile can improve your confidence and make you feel good about yourself, in addition to helping you make an excellent first impression on those you meet as a friendly and charming individual. An improved smile and increased confidence, however, aren’t the only reasons you should think about straightening up those skew teeth.
Because misaligned teeth often overlap, it can be challenging to ensure that you’re adequately cleaning all those little nooks and crannies between the teeth. Your mouth contains bacteria, the presence of which is exacerbated by our daily need to eat and drink – crowded teeth mean more hidden areas for food particles to lurk, which means more bacteria growth above and beyond that which naturally occurs. This increased bacteria growth can cause a whole host of dental issues – halitosis (bad breath), tooth decay, and periodontal disease to name just a few.

Why Should I Worry About Periodontal Disease?

As mentioned, when your teeth are misaligned, there is ample opportunity for bacteria to grow and develop. Because it’s more difficult to clean every inch of the teeth, the risk of developing periodontal disease is increased. Periodontal disease begins with inflamed gums due to bacterial growth. If you’ve noticed that your gums are bleeding after you brush, we recommend a dental visit to ensure that any disease can be treated early. If left untended, periodontal disease can progress swiftly to periodontitis—and you really don’t want that! Periodontitis is a serious gum infection that can cause the gums to recede away from the teeth, the teeth to become loose or fall out, or even destroy the jawbone itself. Periodontitis can be avoided by properly and thoroughly cleaning the teeth every day—a task that is much easier if the teeth are straight!
Furthermore, periodontal disease has been linked to a host of other medical issues. While exact links and causes are yet to be fully established, it has been theorised that people with periodontal disease suffer a higher rate of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks. This is thought to be due to the spread of bacteria in the mouth to other parts of the body, specifically the heart. Avoiding periodontal disease is a great way to lower your risk of suffering a catastrophic cardiac event, and a great way to avoid periodontal disease is by having your teeth straightened!

What Are My Options For Teeth Straightening?

At Dream Smiles Orthodontics, we offer several different teeth straightening methods, and we will discuss with you in detail which one we feel is best for your unique needs.
For a discreet realignment, invisible to all but the most eagle-eyed of observers, we offer clear aligners made of transparent plastic, tooth-coloured braces which match your natural tooth tone, or lingual braces which attach to the inner side of the teeth. All these options provide straightening without the visibility of traditional metal braces. If you’re not bothered about the cosmetic aspect of orthodontia, however, we can kit you out the old-fashioned way with reliable, traditional metal braces.
