The Importance of Treating Gum Disease

Periodontics from Dream Smiles is tasked with treating gum disease and maintaining the oral health of our Brisbane patients.

While gum disease or periodontitis is easily treatable, it is also able to go almost unnoticed by those who suffer from it. It is for this reason that regular dental check-ups are so important. The range of treatments available for gum disease is totally dependent on how far advanced it is. If your gum disease has become chronic, if that is the case then it can only be managed and not cured. Tooth loss is a major problem for those with gum disease and it is among the most important reasons that you should be coming in to see us at least once every six months.

So, What Is Gum Disease?

The bacteria, mucus and food particles inside your mouth form a layer of plaque on your teeth that only regular brushing and flossing can help to get rid of. But, if you aren’t maintaining your oral health, this plaque becomes hard and forms what is known as ‘tartar’. Tartar is essentially a more concentrated substance that becomes almost impossible to remove with simple brushing and flossing. When this happens, only a professional oral hygienist is able to remove it for you.

Gum disease comes in two stages, gingivitis (reversible) and periodontitis (manageable). The longer that plaque and tartar are present in your mouth, the more that they damage your teeth. It is these harmful bacteria that cause inflammation of the gums. Inflammation of the gums is called gingivitis and its symptoms include red or swollen gums that bleed easily and are easily irritated. Should you encounter any of these symptoms we urge patients to make an appointment with us for a check-up and clean as so as possible. If we can catch gingivitis in this early stage, we can reverse its effects and ensure that you don’t suffer any further consequences. Although gingivitis can be an annoyance, it doesn’t cause the loss of any bone or tissue that surrounds your teeth.

Periodontitis also refers to the inflammation around your tooth and as your gums pull away from your tooth, they form little pockets which in turn become infected. The plaque spreads and grows under the line of your gums and your immune system starts to fight its spread. It is this combination of effects that leads to your teeth becoming loose, falling out or becoming damaged and needing to be removed.

Gum Disease Prevention from Dream Smiles

Gum disease is known as the silent killer because the symptoms can be so subtle which accounts for a large number of patients who don’t seek out treatment – because they simply don’t know that it’s there. If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, or you have noticed that your gums appear discoloured, then you might have gum disease.

Other symptoms of gum disease include sensitive teeth, red or swollen gums, pain while chewing, loose teeth or receding gums. These symptoms can occur in isolation or in combination so be on the lookout for any of them at any given time. You should also never wait until you experience any pain or discomfort before you get in touch with us as this does not mean that the symptoms of gum disease are present.

By coming in to see us at least every six months we can eliminate the prevalence of gum disease in its early stages and prevent any further complications that may arise. To make an appointment with us, or to find out more about gum disease, please click here.
